History of Agersø

Written by islander and writer Stig Colbjørn

References to prehistoric ages are present part of Agersø today, as several burial mounds from the Stone Age are still viewable, stones with marks from the Bronze Age and the name itself, Agersø, which is from the Iron Age/Viking Age with the male name Agger, i.e. "Agger's island."

The medieval King, Valdemar II Sejr's land book, lists Agersø for the first time and Agersø was part of the crown estate until 1666, when the island was sold and it remained privately owned until the Constitution in 1849.

The island's interesting history also offers, among other things, a successful peasant revolt in 1774.

The Coastal battery was built in 1808 during the Anglo-Saxon Wars to block enemy navigation through Omøsund; but really to protect the royally privileged gunboat from piracy.

More recently, Agersø has been indirectly portrayed in the Danish classic film "Alarm i Østersøen," which takes place during the German occupation in 1943. Most of Agersø's population at the time acted as extras.

Agersø Church

The church was built in 1872 in red stone with a small tower to the west. The church is particularly known for its distinctive and beautiful interior murials. It is open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset.

Church services and other events can be found under the activity calendar on this page and on the church's Facebook page: www.facebook.com/kirkeristorebaelt

Agersø Mill

Agersø Mill is a Dutch mill from 1892. The mill was in operation until 1959 and has since been restored and given a set of new wings. In 2020, the mill was painted and it now stands beautifully with a view to Agersø Harbour, ready to welcome guests. The mill runs on special occasions, e.g. on Møllens Dag, which is the 3rd Sunday in June each year.

Birgit's memorabilia

Islander Birgit Dam realized a lifelong dream in 2022 of creating a museum based on the large quantities of embroidery for everyday life and parties that the women and men of the family have diligently produced over generations. All chalk-white, stiffened and ironed and presented in beautiful layouts with small explanations that put everything in context of the family’s and local history. As a new initiative, Birgit has dedicated a room to photos from the time during the ice winters with excursions over the ice as well as fishing equipment from old times that has been in the family for generations.

Agersø Ship and Culture Yard

Since 1938, more than 300 wooden ships have been built at Agersø Shipyard. When the last owner passed away in 2015, the building fell into disrepair. With the help of strong forces on the island, funds were obtained for a total renovation of the building, which today stands beautifully and welcomes you in the middle of Agersø Harbour.

In 2022, Agersø Shipyard got a new caretaker and can once again offer the collection of large and small boats on bed or crane, including keelboats.

We offer service of boat engines by agreement.
